Beijing Outbreak Has Been Contained, Top China Expert Says

(Bloomberg) -- A coronavirus outbreak in Beijing that has swelled to more than 150 cases has been contained, a top Chinese expert said.

  • More cases will be confirmed in the coming days, but that should reflect only people who are already infected, Wu Zunyou, the senior epidemiology expert at Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, says at a press conference in the capital
  • All 21 new virus cases reported yesterday were infected before June 12
  • The peak of the Beijing outbreak is estimated to have been June 13
  • The number of new cases will be small, Wu says
  • Beijing will halt all cross-province bus services from June 19, local government official says at same event
  • Turning the tide in Beijing would mark a win for President Xi Jinping, whose handling of the pandemic was brought into focus by the flare-up in the capital. City authorities moved quickly to stem the spread by closing the wholesale market where it is believed to have originated and shuttering some transportation services, among other measures.
