Bank of Italy Staff Back to Work After Computer Issue Solved

Bank of Italy’s computer networks were returning to normal on Friday afternoon after issues with email and internal bank programs were solved.

Employees at the central bank’s Rome headquarters started experiencing problems with their PCs and laptops earlier on Friday, according to several people with knowledge of the situation. The problems were due to technical issues and are now solved, according to the people, who asked for anonymity to discuss internal matters.

The IT department had initially asked employees to turn off their computers and wait for further instructions, fueling concerns of a hacker attack. A text message sent to staff and seen by Bloomberg said that, from about 11 a.m., the anti-virus systems had reported a suspected malware and as a precaution progressively put the users’ PCs in quarantine.

Most Bank of Italy staff are working from their homes due to Covid-19 restrictions, and use laptops to connect to the bank’s network.

A spokeswoman for the bank said the issue didn’t affect the Bank of Italy’s infrastructure and operations, and that the problem had been fixed Friday afternoon.
