Albertsons-Owned Plated Lays Off 10 Percent of Corporate Staff

(Bloomberg) -- Plated, the meal-kit company owned by Albertsons Cos., has laid off about 10 percent of its New York City staff as it reorganizes its corporate office to cut costs.

The job cuts, which impact about 25 workers, were announced earlier Tuesday, Albertsons spokeswoman Christine Wilcox said in an email. The cuts will allow Plated to reduce expenses and better utilize the larger company’s operations structure already in place.

“The responsibilities of those individuals will be distributed among the remaining staff at Plated as well as other teams in Albertsons,” Wilcox said.

The news follows the announcement in January that Plated co-founder and then-chief executive officer Josh Hix had decided to leave the company, which Albertsons acquired in 2017. Last year, closely held Albertsons -- whose grocery chains include Safeway and Shaw’s -- started to sell Plated meal kits in some stores, as the model has proliferated beyond the original online subscription plan.
