Revolving Door: NYC Jailed 2,800 Three or More Times Last Year

(Bloomberg) -- In 2017, there were 58,226 admissions to New York City’s jails, a greater number than the enrollment at most universities in the country. For about 70 percent of these individuals it was a return visit as 30,443 had been jailed by the city at least one other time between 2008 through 2017. About one third of this group had a recidivism rate of 5 or more jailings. More than a tenth of the repeat offenders visited 10 or more times and 775 individuals had 20 or more previous admissions over the last 10 years, according to Department of Correction data prepared by the New York City Independent Budget Office.
