South African Police Unit Seeks `Fugitive' Gupta Brother Ajay

(Bloomberg) -- The South African police’s investigative Hawks unit is seeking Ajay Gupta, a member of the family allied to former President Jacob Zuma, after he failed to turn himself in.

Gupta “is now regarded as fugitive,” the Hawks said in an emailed statement Thursday. “It is understood that he has personal protectors and they are being warned to either hand him over or they might face charges of directly aiding and abetting the fugitive.”

Crime-fighting authorities in South Africa have been accelerating investigations involving the family in recent weeks. The Hawks raided the Gupta compound Wednesday, and several people linked to the family were granted bail by a South African court on Thursday after appearing on charges related to a graft scandal involving a farm in the Free State province. The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing.
