Coinbase Says Twitter's Tina Bhatnagar to Lead Customer Support

(Bloomberg) -- Coinbase Inc. , one of the leading cryptocurrency exchange and digital wallet services, has hired Tina Bhatnagar to help it cope with overwhelming customer demand.

Bhatnagar will be Coinbase’s vice president of operations and technology, the San Francisco-based company said in a blog post Monday. She held a similar post at Twitter Inc., where over five and a half years her group went from addressing 20,000 monthly interactions with users to handling millions a month. She will lead all operational teams related to Coinbase and its GDAX exchange customers.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I could come in and have an immediate impact,” Bhatnagar said in a telephone interview. “Help with maturing operations and scaling.”

Coinbase has pledged to double the size of its support staff over the next three months and expand around-the-clock phone support to all customers by the second quarter. Coinbase angered customers last year when its exchange was hit with periodic service disruptions as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies gained more mainstream appeal.

The company will put local support teams in regions where it operates, Bhatnagar said. In the coming year, they’ll set up a support team in Europe, she said.

In December, Coinbase hired Asiff Hirji, who used to be with venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz as well as president of TD Ameritrade and ran HP Enterprise Services, to be its new president and chief operating officer. The same month, the company said that David Marcus, head of Messenger at Facebook Inc. and former president of PayPal, would join its board.
