‘Invisible Man’ Makes Presence Felt at Weekend Box Office

(Bloomberg) -- “The Invisible Man” starring Elisabeth Moss is on track to be the first breakout horror film of 2020, with a modern twist on the century-old story.

• The film from Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures opened with weekend sales of $28.2 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, Comscore Inc. said Monday. Analysts had expected $28 million to $30 million.

• “The Invisible Man” is based loosely on the H.G. Wells novel published in 1897 and released on film in 1933. But it gets a modern twist with Moss playing a woman who flees an abusive relationship, finds out her ex has committed suicide and then begins to fear she’s being stalked.

• Vox wrote that the film is “eerily well-timed, releasing in theaters mere days after film mogul Harvey Weinstein’s conviction on two criminal charges, including rape.” The picture got a 90% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
• Among returning films, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” from ViacomCBS Inc.’s Paramount division, and “The Call of the Wild,” from Walt Disney Co.’s 20th Century Studios, came in second and third places, respectively.
