Indian shares will open for only an hour-long session (from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm) on Thursday, when traders and investors make ceremonial purchases marking the Diwali festival.

The S&P BSE Sensex closed 0.4% lower at 59,771.92 on Wednesday, while the NSE Nifty 50 Index fell 0.3%. The benchmark index was volatile, swinging between a loss of as much as 0.8% and gains of 0.6% during the day.

Markets are closed Thursday and Friday -- with the exception of a one-hour ceremonial trading session today evening -- to mark Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

“September-quarter corporate earnings continue to help up and support the market, despite supply chain disruptions, higher commodity prices and talk of policy tapering,” Binod Modi, head of strategy at Reliance Securities, wrote in a note. He expects festive season demand and the scale of recovery in rural areas to guide markets in the near term, along with local developments in the Covid pandemic.
