Sensex, Nifty End Off Day’s Low But Winning Run Ends

The record breaking of India's equity markets took a breather in today's weekly options expiry session. Benchmark indices ended with modest losses, after recovering from the lowest point of the day.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 0.3% lower at 45,959. The index recovered close to 300 points from the day's low. The NSE Nifty 50 index too recovered 80 points from the lowest point of the day, but ended 0.4% lower at 13,478. The Sensex snapped a five-day winning streak while for the Nifty, it was the first decline after seven straight days of gains.

Among the sectoral indices, the Media and PSU bank indices were the key laggards in today's session, both ending lower by over 1.5% each.

The Nifty Auto index declined 1% while the Nifty Bank ended 0.6% lower, recovering over 300 points from the day's low.

What bucked the trend today were FMCG stocks. The index ended with gains of 2.8% and at a record high. This was also the biggest single-day gain for the stock in over six months.

Modest gains were also seen in the Nifty Realty (up 0.4%) and Nifty Metal index (up 0.2%).

Broader markets underperformed the benchmarks in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index fell 0.8% while the Smallcap index declined 0.5% in today's session.

The India Volatility Index ended 1.6% lower at 18.61.

1,171 stocks on the NSE ended with losses while 726 managed to end with gains.

Opening Bell

Indian equity markets opened with modest losses in today's session, after a multi-day gaining streak, tracking subdued global cues.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.23% lower at 45,999 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened below the mark of 13,500 - down 0.3% at 13,488. As of closing on Wednesday, the Sensex has gained for five straight days while the Nifty has had a seven day winning run.

Sectoral indices too have opened flat. The Nifty Bank index is down 0.5% while the PSU Bank index has opened 0.8% lower.

Nifty I.T. and Nifty Media are down 0.5% each. Other indices are flat.

Broader markets have barely moved from Wednesday's closing levels at the start of the weekly options expiry session. Both Nifty Midcap and Smallcap are unchanged.

Indian equity markets continued their record-breaking run on Wednesday, with the Sensex closing above 46,000 and the Nifty 50 above 13,500.

The Sensex scaled the last 1,000 points in three trading sessions. The index had crossed 45,000 on Friday.

Futures however, are pointing to a weak start to the today's trade. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, fell 0.4% to 13,505 as of 8:20 a.m. on Thursday.

For today's weekly options expiry session, Canara Bank is out of the F&O ban, while Punjab National Bank entered.

Asian markets are witnessing modest declines this morning after a weak overnight close on Wall Street. Benchmarks across the region are trading with a negative bias.

Futures on the Dow Jones are currently trading 30 points higher. The index fell 0.3% overnight. The Nasdaq snapped a 10-day winning streak.

West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.5% to $45.75 per barrel, while gold traded at $1,838.1/Oz.
