Sensex, Nifty Post Modest Gains; ONGC, L&T Top Performers

Closing Bell
Indian equity markets remained sideways for the third straight day, ending with modest gains but registering another record high.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended with gains of 0.34% at 46,253 while the NSE Nifty index ended 0.33% higher at 13,558. Both the benchmark indices ended higher for the second straight day.
Among sectoral indices, it was the PSU Banks and Media stocks that outperformed in today's session. Both the respective indices ended with gains of 1.8% each.
The Nifty Metal index was the other sectoral gainer in today's session, ending 1.4% higher. The index ended at the highest level in two years.
Auto and Real Estate stocks were the laggards in today's session. Both the respective indices fell over 1% in today's session.
Broader markets outperformed to start the week on a strong note. The Midcap index gained 0.6% while the Smallcap index ended 0.8% higher.
India Volatility Index rose 3.4% to end at 19.43.
1,204 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 697 stocks declined.

Opening Bell
Indian equity markets began the new trading week on a steady note, opening at record high levels.
The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.4% higher at 46,284 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened 0.43% higher at 13,571. Both benchmarks registered their sixth straight weekly advance last week.
Among the sectoral indices, both Nifty Media and Nifty Metal index opened with gains of 1% each while the PSU Bank index rose 1.2%.
Nifty FMCG, Nifty Bank gained 0.4% while the I.T. index gained 0.5% at the start of trade.
Broader markets too have opened with gains today. The Midcap index is up 0.6% while the Smallcap index is outperforming with gains of 0.8%.
1,117 stocks on the NSE have opened with gains while 817 have declined.

Indian equity markets posted their sixth straight weekly gains on Friday — the longest such winning streak since July this year. The S&P BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 had gained close to 2% each last week.
The prompted analysts to say that the 50-stock gauge needs to cross 13,600 for the next leg of upmove towards 13,750.
Futures are pointing towards a positive start to the new trading week. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.4% to 13,585 as of 7:40 a.m. on Monday.
Burger King India will debut on the bourses today after investors piled into its shares, making it the second-most successful IPO of the year. It was the third such issue of 2020 that saw an overall subscription of over 150 times.
Globally, Asian markets have begun on a positive note this morning as investors take comfort from further negotiations on the stimulus front and the impending arrival of a Covid-19 vaccine in the U.S.
Futures on the Dow Jones are trading with gains of 180 points. The index ended little changed on Friday.
West Texas Intermediate crude was little changed at $46.58 per barrel, while gold fell 0.2% to $1,836.6/Oz.
