Sensex, Nifty End Higher For Second Day; Broader Markets Outperform

Closing Bell

Indian equity markets continued their rebound from Monday's losses, ending higher for the second straight day with buying seen across the board.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended nearly 1% higher at 46,444 while the NSE Nifty 50 index ended above the mark of 13,600, up 1% at 13,601. Both the benchmarks have now recovered nearly 2% of Monday's 3% decline.

Among the sectoral indices, Media and Realty were the outperformers in today's session. The Nifty Realty index gained nearly 4% while the Media index rose 3.3%.

The Nifty I.T. index continued its winning run, gaining 2.4% to end at another record high. The PSU Bank index gained 2.1% while the FMCG index rose 1.9%.

Broader markets outperformed in today's trading session. The Nifty Midcap index ended 2.4% higher while the Smallcap index rose 2.7% ahead of the weekly options expiry session tomorrow.

The India Volatility Index fell 6.8% to 20.5.

1,603 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 303 reported losses.

Indian equity markets have opened on a subdued note as sentiment across the globe remains cautious ahead of a potential Covid-19 vaccine.

The S&P BSE Sensex has opened 0.1% higher at 46,072 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened with gains of 7 points at 13,473. Both benchmarks recovered at least one-third of Monday's losses in Tuesday's trading session.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty I.T. index continues to extend its gains. The index has opened at another record high, with gains of 0.75%.

Other indices like the Nifty Bank has opened 0.2% lower while the PSU Bank index is down 0.4%. Indices like media and metal are little changed.

Broader markets are outperforming at the start of trade today. The midcap index is up 0.8% while the Smallcap index is up 0.4%.

A Subdued Start Likely

Indian equities managed to recover a third of the losses it posted on Monday as foreign investors resumed their buying ahead of the holiday season.

IT stocks were the biggest contributors to the gains on Tuesday. The Nifty IT index ended at a record high. HCL Technologies Ltd., Tech Mahindra Ltd. and Infosys Ltd. were among the top five gainers on the Nifty 50. Infosys and Wipro will also remain in focus today on the back of deals signed.

Futures, however, are indicating that today’s session may open with a negative bias. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, fell 0.4% to 13,432 as of 7:55 a.m. on Wednesday.

Globally, Asian equities have pared gains as the U.S. stock futures declined this morning after outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump said he is asking the Congress to amend the pandemic aid legislation.

Futures on the Dow Jones are currently trading 130 points lower. The index fell 0.7% on Tuesday.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1% to $46.55 per barrel, while gold rose 0.3% to $1,866.22/Oz.
