Sensex, Nifty See Modest Gains; PSU Bank Index Jumps 7%

Closing Bell

Indian equity markets posted yet another day of gains, although modest, amidst subdued global cues.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 0.4% higher at 45,608 while the NSE Nifty 50 index ended 0.3% higher at 13,392. The Sensex gained for the fourth straight day while the Nifty advanced for the sixth straight session.

The outperformers of today's trading session were the PSU Banks. The PSU Bank index ended with gains of over 7% - which was its biggest single-day gain in six months. The index gained for the fourth straight day and rose to its highest level in nine months. Stocks like Canara Bank, Indian Bank gained nearly 20%, which was their biggest single-day advance since October 2017.

Other indices like the Nifty I.T. and Nifty Realty indices gained 0.8%. Among the laggards today were Nifty Metal and Nifty Pharma, both of which ended lower by 1.2% each.

Broader markets were little changed. Both Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices ended little changed from Monday's levels.

India Volatility Index ended 3.3% higher at 18.61.

918 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 980 posted losses.

More Participants To The Rally?

Opening Bell

Indian equity markets have opened with modest gains in today's trading session, amidst subdued global cues.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.3% higher at 45,568. The index opened higher for the fourth straight day. The NSE Nifty 50 index opened with gains for the sixth straight session, opening near the mark of 13,400 at 13,393 - up 0.3%.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Media index has opened 0.7% higher while the PSU Bank index is up 0.6%. The Nifty Metal index is up 0.4% while the Nifty Bank, Nifty Realty and Nifty FMCG index are up 0.3% each at the start of trade.

Broader markets are outperforming at the start of trade. The Nifty Midcap index is up for the eighth straight day, trading with gains of 0.9% while the Smallcap index is trading 0.8% higher at the start of trade.

1,331 stocks on the NSE are trading with gains while 296 stocks decline.

A Flat Start Likely

The rally in Indian equities continued on Monday as well, with the NSE Nifty 50 ending higher for the fifth straight session. Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 touched another record high on the first trading day of the new week.

The broader markets, too, advanced. The Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices rose to their highest in more than two years.

Futures, however, are indicating a flat start to today's trading session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, was little changed at 13,408 as of 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Canara Bank is the only stock that is in the F&O Ban for today's session. It will also be in focus for the launch of its QIP. In terms of options positions, the 13,500 call for this Thursday's expiry continues to command the highest open interest with over 30 lakh shares. The put base, however, has moved higher to the 13,200 strike, which now has 36 lakh shares in open interest.

Asian markets are drifting lower this morning with benchmarks in South Korea and Hong Kong declining. Japanese shares are fluctuating.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading 80 points lower. The index fell 0.5% on Monday.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.5% to $45.54 per barrel, while gold traded at $1,864.67/Oz.
