Sensex, Nifty Log Best Close In Nearly Three Weeks Led By Infosys, HDFC Bank

Indian equity benchmarks registered their best close in nearly three weeks, recovering yesterday’s losses.

The benchmark indices were led by the gains in Infosys Ltd. and HDFC Bank Ltd. The S&P BSE Sensex ended 279 points or 0.75 percent higher at 37,979.48 and the NSE Nifty 50 ended at 11,257.10, up 0.9 percent. The broader market index represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index ended 0.67 percent higher.

The market breadth, however was tilted in favour of sellers. About 898 stocks declined and 841 shares advanced on National Stock Exchange.

Ten out of 11 sectoral gauges compiled by NSE ended higher, led by the NSE Nifty Media index’s 2.26 percent gain. On the flipside, the NSE Nifty Pharma index was the only sectoral loser, down 0.21 percent.

Bajaj Finance Gains After Q4 Results

Shares of Bajaj Finance rose as much as 3.2 percent to Rs 3,100 after the company announced its Fourth quarter results.

IndiGo Falls Over 7% After Report Of Rift Between Founders

Shares of the country’s largest airline declined fell as much as 7.7 percent, the most in over seven months to Rs 1,485.75.

Differences have cropped up between Rakesh Gangal and Rahul Bhatia, the promoters of IndiGo, and both have hired law firms to sort out the issues, Economic Times reported quoting unnamed sources.

The stock advanced nearly 30 percent in the last 12 months compared to a 5 percent gain in the Sensex.

Sun Pharma Drops Over 7%

Shares of Sun pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. extended fall for the second consecutive trading session and declined as much as 7.5 percent to Rs 379.05.

Trading volume was more than double its 20-day average, Bloomberg data showed. The Relative Strength Index was at 28, indicating that the stock may be oversold.

Ashok Leyland Rebounds After Order Win

Shares of Ashok Leyland rebounded from day’s low to trade 0.6 percent higher at Rs 82.45.

The company bagged a contract for 400 units of 916 Minibuses valuing 10.06 million Euros from Senegal, according to its statement on the exchanges.

The stock declined 20.4 percent so far this year and fell 45.6 percent in the past 12 months.

About 21.1 lakh shares of SAIL changed hands in a single block, Bloomberg data showed. Buyers and sellers were not known immediately.

Shares of Titan extended gains for the eighth consecutive trading session, their longest gaining streak in two months. The stock rose as much as 1 percent to hit an all-time high.

The scrip advanced 6 percent in the past five days and gained 4.6 percent in the past 30 days. Titan traded at 56 times its estimated earnings per share for the coming year, Bloomberg data showed.

Bajaj Finance Extends Gain Ahead Of Results Announcement

Shares of Bajaj Finance extended gains for the second consecutive trading session and rose as much as 1.7 percent to Rs 3,053.70 ahead of results announcement.

Here’s what analysts tracked by Bloomberg expects the company to report during March quarter on a yearly basis:

  • Net interest income seen 38 percent higher at Rs 3,263 crore.
  • Net profit seen 52 percent higher at Rs 1,092 crore.

Tata Chemicals Rises On Business Rejig

Shares of Tata Chemicals rose as much as 5.2 percent to Rs 585.45.

The Tata Group will bring its consumer businesses under one unit as the salt-to-software conglomerate continues restructuring to streamline its operations. Tata Chemicals will demerge its food business to Tata Global Beverages. Shareholders will get 114 shares of Tata Global for every 100 held in Tata Chemicals.

Besides, shares of Tata Global Beverages retreats after gaining 4 percent intraday.

Petronet LNG Falls After Q4 Results Announcement

Shares of Petronet LNG extended declines for the second consecutive trading session and fell as much as 3.6 percent, the most in over three months, to Rs 225 after the company announced its March quarter results.

Opening Bell: Sensex, Nifty Open Higher

Indian equity benchmarks opened higher, led by the gains in Reliance Industries Ltd. and Infosys Ltd.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose as much as 0.24 percent to 37,204.77 and the NSE Nifty 50 rose as much as 0.24 percent to 11,183.85. The broader market index represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index rose as much as 0.21 percent.

The market breadth was tilted in favour of buyers. About 798 stocks advanced and 647 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.

Eight out of 11 sectoral gauges compiled by NSE advanced, led by the NSE Nifty IT Index’s 0.49 percent gain. On the flipside, the NSE Nifty Pharma Index was the top sectoral loser, down 0.54 percent.

Money Market Update: Rupee Opens Higher

The Indian rupee opened higher against the U.S. dollar. The home currency appreciated as much as 0.14 percent to 70.24 against the greenback.

India's trade deficit widened to a five-month high at $15.3 billion. Asian cues remain mixed and the pair may stay in a range of 70-70.60 a dollar.

The Reserve Bank of India will buy up to Rs 12,500 crore of bonds via open market operation today. The buyback is a part of the central bank's plan to inject Rs 25,000 crore of funds in the month of May. Yield on the benchmark bond was little changed at 7.38 percent in the last session. For today, dealers expect it to trade between 7.35-7.40 percent in the session.

Asian equities traded mixed. The yen climbed and sovereign bond yields dropped as weak U.S. consumer data added to concerns about escalating trade tensions and their impact on the global economy.

Japanese stocks fell, while shares showed modest gains in South Korea and Australia.
