India's stock benchmarks advanced, aided by gains in energy, telecom, auto, metal, power and realty stocks. This is the fourth consecutive session the S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 have logged gains. Focus shifts to information technology stocks as Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., Infosys Ltd. and Wipro Ltd. are scheduled to report their December quarter earnings post market hours.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.88% to 61,150.04. This is the first time the 30-stock gauge closed above 61,000 in 10 weeks. This is also the highest close for Sensex since Nov. 26, 2021. The NSE Nifty 50 also advanced by similar magnitude to 18,212.35. This is the first time the 50-stock gauge close above 18,200 in 10 weeks. This is also the highest close for Nifty since Nov. 26, 2021.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. had the largest increase, rising 4.7%. Today, 37 of 50 shares rose, while 13 fell.

The broader indices almost mirrored their larger peers with S&P BSE MidCap adding over 1% and S&P BSE SmallCap gaining 0.7%. Barring S&P BSE Healthcare and S&P BSE Consumer Durables, all the other 17 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. rose, with S&P Telecom gaining over 3% and S&P BSE Power, Energy and Utilities advancing over 2%.

The market breadth was skewed in the favour of bulls. About 1,839 stocks advanced, 1,609 declined and 82 remained unchanged.

"The Nifty has maintained a breakout continuation formation but profit booking at higher levels is not ruled out due to the extended rally in recent sessions", Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research (Retail), Kotak Securities Ltd. wrote in a note and added that "the 18,100 level would be the key to watch out for and above the same the uptrend texture will continue up to 18,275-18,350. On the other hand, below 18,100, the market may trigger short-term correction up to 18,050-18,000 levels".

Kolte-Patil Developers Ltd. has posted a 28% QoQ growth in sales volume in December quarter, according to its business update

Mid-Day Market Update: Sensex, Nifty Advance; M&M, Hindalco, Reliance Industries Rise

India's stock benchmarks advanced, aided by gains in metals, auto, banking, energy, telecom and realty stocks, amid a rebound in global equities after U.S. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell assured investors that the measures to tackle inflation would not derail economic growth.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.77% to 61,085.09. The 30-stock gauge rose nearly 1% in intraday trade. This is the first time Sensex reclaimed 61,000 mark after nearly two months. The NSE Nifty 50 also advanced by similar magnitude to 18,190.65. The 50-stock gauge reclaimed 18,200 mark in intraday trade.

The market breadth was skewed in the favour of bulls. About 1,795 stocks advanced, 1,593 stocks advanced and 85 remained unchanged.

HeidelbergCement India Commissions Alternate Fuel Plant

HiedelbergCement India Ltd. has commissioned a state-of-the-art facility to substitute part of fossil fuels with alternate fuels in cement production, the company said in an exchange filing.

  • The facility -- built at Damoh in Madhya Pradesh with an investment of Rs 16 crore -- will help the company achieve thermal substitute rate of 5% in the first phase.

  • The facility is expected to reduce the company's carbon dioxide emissions by 42,000 tonnes per annum.

India Bonds Are Lower Ahead Of Expected CPI Acceleration

  • Indian bonds are lower with traders awaiting a data release that’s forecast to show consumer-price inflation accelerated in December. The rupee is trading steady.

  • CPI probably rose to 5.8% YoY in December, the highest in six months, from 4.91% a month earlier, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists. The data is published at 5:30 p.m.

Shares of Varun Beverages rose over 4% in intraday trade after Jefferies retained its 'high-conviction buy' on the stock and maintained its price target at Rs 1,215, an implied return of 40%, in a note on Tuesday.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.55% to 60,951.28. The NSE Nifty 50 also advanced by similar magnitude to 18,150.80. Hindalco Industries Ltd. had the largest increase, rising 2.3%. In early trading, 45 of 50 shares rose, while 5 fell.

Traders Await Inflation Data; Rupee Set To Gain

Indian bond traders are awaiting inflation numbers that are forecast to show consumer-price gains accelerated in December. The rupee is set to open higher, following gains in its Asian peers.

CPI probably rose to 5.8% YoY in December, the highest in six months, from 4.91% a month earlier, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists before the data is published at 5:30 p.m.

  • India’s 10-year bond yields fell 2bps to 6.57% on Tuesday after the government announced a new 10-year bond sale.

  • USD/INR fell 0.2% to 73.9125 on Tuesday

  • Tata Consumer Products: The company has appointed Gharry Eccles as president–international business with effect from Jan. 17, 2022. Eccles will replace Adil Ahmad who will be retiring on May 31.

  • Tata Teleservices: The company has decided to convert interest related to AGR dues into equity. The government will hold 9.5% stake in the company.

  • Shriram Transport Finance: The company has raised $475 million Fixed Rate Senior Secured 144A /Reg S Bond (available ECB limit for FY22) for a 3.5-year tenor at an interest rate of 4.15%. The proceeds from the STFC social bond would be used for employment generation, including through MSME financing.

  • Delta Corp.: The company reported a net profit of Rs 70.38 crore in Q3 as compared to a loss of Rs 22.57 crore in the previous quarter. The revenue more than doubled at Rs 247.22 crore. The company said its online gaming business arm will explore an IPO by way of offer for sale of equity shares.

  • Marico: The company will consider second interim dividend on Jan. 28.

  • Hindalco: Novelis, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, will build $365 million aluminum recycling plant in U.S. with annual capacity of about 240,000 metric tons of sheet ingot. It is expected to commence operations in 2024.

  • Indian Railway Finance Corporation: The company updated its global medium term note programme by increasing the principal amount of notes that may be issues from $4,000,000,000 to $7,000,000,000.

  • Ultratech Cement: The company has commissioned Line II of the Bara Grinding Unit in Uttar Pradesh taking its total cement manufacturing capacity in India to 114.55 MTPA.
