Sensex, Nifty End Off The Day’s Low Led By Rebound In Autos, Pharma

Another Rangebound Session

Indian equities had another volatile, rangebound session to end with modest losses for the second straight session.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 20 points lower at 51,309 while the NSE Nifty 50 ended little changed at 15,106.

Among the sectoral indices, the Realty index was the top performing sectoral index in today's session, ending with gains of 1.6%. The Auto index ended 1% higher while the Nifty Pharma index ended with gains of 0.7%.

The Nifty Bank index was the laggard in today's session, ending 0.7% lower while other sectoral indices ended little changed.

Broader markets outperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.8% while the Smallcap index rose 0.7% at the close of trade.

India Volatility Index fell 1.6% to end at 23.88.

919 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 971 stocks ended with losses.

Subdued Start To Trade

Indian equities opened little changed in mid-week trade after snapping a six-day gaining streak in the final minutes of Tuesday's session.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 27 points higher at 51,355 while the NSE Nifty 50 index was up 10 points at the start of trade at 15,119.

Most sectoral indices have also opened flat in today's session. The Metal index is up 1% while the Media index is up 0.4%. Other indices are little changed.

Broader markets have opened higher as compared to the benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap index is up 0.4% while the Small cap index is up 0.5% in the early minutes of trade.

1,052 stocks on the NSE opened with gains while 466 are trading lower.

Pressure At Higher Levels

Indian equities snapped a six-session winning streak on Tuesday after a near 10% jump since the start of February.

The S&P BSE Sensex fell more than 500 points from the day's high, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 150 points.

Futures, however, are indicating a start with gains to Wednesday’s session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.35% to 15,170 as of 8:15 a.m.

Tata Steel, Akzo Nobel, Mahanagar Gas, among others, may react to their quarterly results reported after market hours on Tuesday.

Four Nifty 50 companies — Eicher Motors, GAIL, Hindalco and Titan — will announce their earnings on Wednesday, along with broader market stocks such as Aurobindo Pharma, Bata, BEML, Happiest Minds Technologies and Indraprastha Gas.

Asian equities have pushed higher after a muted start to the morning trade. Markets in Hong Kong are leading the advance, while China's markets will remain shut for a week due to the Lunar New Year holiday.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading 100 points higher. The index ended little changed on Tuesday.

West Texas Intermediate crude traded flat at $58.29 per barrel, while bitcoin pulled back from its record high.
