Supreme Court Allows Lenders To Resume Marking Bad Loans

  • An order published on the Supreme Court website said that lenders can resume marking non-performing assets or NPAs.
  • "Interim relief granted earlier not to declare the accounts of respective borrowers as NPA stands vacated," a three-judge panel headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said in the verdict.
  • The Nifty Bank index is currently trading 0.8% higher at 33,882.

A Subdued Start To Trade

Indian equities have opened little changed this morning after a volatile session on Monday. Sentiment across the Asia-Pacific is mixed.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.2% higher at 49,876 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened 30 points higher at 14,768. Both benchmarks have declined in five out of the last six trading sessions.

Among the sectoral indices, the PSU Bank index has opened 0.6% higher while the Nifty Bank index is up 150 points or 0.4% at the start of trade.

The Nify Auto index has opened with gains of 0.4% while Nifty I.T. and the Media index have opened with gains of 0.3% each.

Broader markets have opened largely in-line with the benchmark indices. Both Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap have opened with gains of 0.4% each.

1,228 stocks on the NSE have opened with gains while 385 are trading lower.

Volatility Ahead Of Expiry

Good Morning!

Indian equities began the March F&O series expiry week on a volatile note, ending with a negative bias after recovering from the day's low.

Both S&P BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 indices have now declined in five out of the last six trading sessions.

Futures are indicating another volatile start to Tuesday's session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.2% to 14,749, as of 7:45 a.m.

Asian equities are fluctuating this morning after peers on Wall Street rose overnight and bond yields cooled off ahead of the treasury auctions.

Benchmark indices in China and Hong Kong edged lower, while markets in Japan and Australia edged higher. Yields on the 10-year treasuries are off their highest level in at least 14 months at 1.69%.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading 20 points higher. The index rose 0.3% overnight.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1.1% to $60.91 per barrel.
