Sensex, Nifty End Little Changed; Metals, State-Run Lenders Shine

A Volatile Day Of Trade

Indian equities gave up gains from the early part of the trading day to end little changed as private banking stocks underperformed.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 50 points lower at 52,104 while the NSE Nifty 50 index ended unchanged from Monday's closing at 15,313.

After a 1,300 point surge on Monday, the Nifty Bank index saw some consolidation to end 200 points or 0.6% lower at 37,098.

Metal stocks were the biggest outperformers in today's session with the Metal index ending with gains of 2.9%. State-run banks were the other outperformers with the PSU Bank index ending 1.6% higher.

I.T. stocks were the biggest laggards in today's session, with the Nifty I.T. index ending with cuts of 1.5%.

Most other indices were little changed.

Broader Markets outperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.4% while the Small cap index ended 0.1% higher.

The India Volatility Index ended 1.4% higher at 21.78.

1,056 stocks on the NSE ended lower while 829 stocks posted gains.

Optimistic Commentary From Bharat Forge

A Steady Start To Trade

Indian equities have opened with a positive bias on Tuesday, echoing the sentiment across the Asia-Pacific, where markets are trading with strong gains.

The S&P BSE Sense has opened 0.5% higher at 52,400 while the NSE Nifty 50 index is up 0.4% at the start of trade at 15,371.

After a 1,300 point surge on Monday, the Nifty Bank has opened 0.5% higher at 37,492 while the PSU Bank index is up 2% on news reports of privatisation of various state-run lenders.

Among other sectoral indices, the Nifty I.T. index is up 0.5% while the Auto index has gained 0.4%.

Broader markets have opened in-line with the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap index is up 0.4% while the Small cap index is up 0.5% in the early minutes of trading.

1,199 stocks on the NSE have opened with gains while 406 are declining.

Current Market Update

Consolidation After Rally?

Good Morning!

Indian equities scaled new peaks on Monday, led by the financials. The Sensex, Nifty 50 and the Nifty Bank hit record highs. Eight of the top 10 Nifty gainers on Monday were financial stocks.

While the Sensex and Nifty have gained 12% so far this month, the Nifty Bank has outperformed the benchmarks, rallying 22% since the Union budget.

Futures, however, are indicating a flat start to Tuesday’s trading session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, was little changed at 15,342 as of 8:05 a.m.

Nestle India is the last Nifty 50 company to report results on Tuesday, along with Varun Beverages and Schaeffler India.

Asian indices continued to extend their gains this morning. Japanese stocks outperformed, while those in Australia and South Korea saw more modest gains. The U.S. markets were shut overnight but futures on the Dow Jones are trading higher by 250 points.

Yield on the 10-year treasuries jumped to their highest in nearly a year, while oil prices traded around a 13-month high. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1% to $60.08 per barrel, owing to supply disruptions in Texas.
