Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty End With Gains

Indian equity markets ended the trading session with gains, though off the highest point of the day, tracking positive cues from European Markets and the Dow Futures which are currently trading at the day’s high.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 2.67 percent higher at 26,674, with gains of almost 700 points. 19 out of the 30 stocks ended the session with gains while 13 ended at a 52-week low.

The NSE Nifty 50 index ended with gains of 2.51 percent at 7,801. 35 out of the 50 constituents ended with gains while 17 of them ended at a 52-week low.

All sectoral indices barring the Nifty Realty index (down 2 percent), ended the session with gains. The Nifty Bank too recovered 1,000 points from the day's low to end with gains of 1.1 percent.

Market breadth remained almost equal with 799 stocks ending the day with gains while 987 stocks ended with declines.

Finance Minister Comments On Market Volatility

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the regulators, Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India are working together and monitoring the volatility in the Indian Markets.

The minister added that while market regulator SEBI has come out with norms to contain the short-term volatility, they are consciously monitoring the stock markets three-times a day.

Mahindra & Mahindra Lowest Since 2010

Shares of the automobile and farm equipment manufacturer are down for the eight in the last ten trading session. Prices have corrected 42 percent in the last ten trading sessions.

The stock had made a 52-week high of Rs 695.5 on April 16, 2019. Since then, it has corrected over 60 percent to Rs 268, which is the lowest level since May 2010.

The stock is the worst performing stock on the Nifty 50 today.

IndusInd Bank Speaks To Bloomberg

IndusInd International Holdings, a promoter of IndusInd Bank has repaid 80 percent of a loan that is been backed by shares of the bank. The balance 20 percent of the facility will be settled in the next few days, a spokesperson told Bloomberg.

Shares recovered almost 30 percent from the lowest point of the day to trade 1.1 percent higher at Rs 339 on the National Stock Exchange.

Sterlite Tech Approves Share Buyback

The Board of Directors of the company at a meeting today approved a share buyback worth Rs 145 crore. The company will buyback equity shares of Rs 2 each at a price of Rs 150 per share. The buyback price is at a premium of 136 percent to Monday's closing price of Rs 63.55.

The buyback size represents 9.95 percent of the total paid-up equity capital.

Shares surged as much as 19 percent to Rs 75.60 on the National Stock Exchange, post the announcement, snapping a two-day losing streak.

Stock Reaction: HUL Rises Post VWash Acquisition

Shares of the FMCG major rose as much as 10.17 percent on the National Stock Exchange to Rs 2,059 after it signed an agreement to acquire intimate hygine brand VWash from Glenmark Pharma. Under this agreement, the brand, trademarks, copyrights and know-hows associated with the business will be transferred to HUL.

The stock is the third highest point contributor on the Nifty 50 index, behind Infosys and Reliance Industries, contributing 20 points to the upside.

Shares of Glenmark Pharma Ltd. too are trading with gains of 4.1 percent at Rs 195.80.

Stock Reaction: Infosys Rises After Probe Completion

Shares of the technology bellweather rose as much as 10.05 percent on the National Stock Exchange to Rs 579.35.

The company in a statement said that the SEC has completed its investigation and that it has co-operated with the investigations with them.

The statement added that the company does not anticipate further action from the SEC and that all inquires from Indian regulators have been responded to.

Markets At 10:20 A.M.

  • Nifty gives up gains of as much as 5 percent to trade 0.8 percent lower at 7,550
  • Sensex too gives up gains of as much as 5.7 percent to trade 1 percent lower at 25,735.
  • Nifty Bank is the top sectoral laggard, down 4 percent
  • Midcap and Smallcap Indices trade 1.2 and 3.7 percent lower

Nifty Bank Near Four-Year Low

The Nifty Bank index has seen a 1,500 point intra-day swing. It now trades below Monday’s closing level of 16,424, the lowest level since May 2016. 7 out the 12 constituents are trading at a 52-week low

Stock Reaction: Aviation Stocks Decline

Shares of Spicejet Ltd. were locked in a 5 percent lower circuit after the government suspended all domestic flight operations until March 31, in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak. This is the second straight day of lower circuit for the stock after it snapped a seven-day losing streak on Friday.

Shares of Interglobe Aviation Ltd. too are locked in a 10 percent lower circuit. This is the 10th straight day of decline for India's largest Airline by market share. The stock trades at the lowest level since October 2018.

The stock is down 36 percent in the last 10 sessions and is now trading near its IPO price of Rs 755.

I.T., FMCG Stocks Lead The Gains

Opening Bell: Markets Open Positive

Indian equity markets opened positive, rebounding after seeing one of their worst selloff in history on Monday. Benchmarks tracked positive cues from Asian Markets and a host of stimulus measures from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened with gains of 5.7 percent at 27,462, rebounding from its biggest one-day fall ever. All the 30 constituents opened with gains.

The NSE Nifty 50 index too rebounded from its biggest one-day fall, rising as much as 5.61 percent on open to 8,036. All the 50 stocks opened with gains.

Among sectoral indices, all the 11 indices opened with gains, with FMCG and I.T. leading the charge.

Market breadth was in favour of the gainers, with 981 stocks on the NSE opening with gains, while 380 opened with losses.

Money Market Update

The Indian Currency staged a rebound after ending at a record low in Monday's trading session. The rupee opened at 76.14 and strengthened to 76.09 against the U.S. dollar as compared to Monday's close of 76.2937 which was an all-time low.

SGX Nifty Jumps 5% As Global Equities Attempt Rebound

The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of NSE Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 5.26 percent to 7,962 as of 8:00 a.m.

Markets across Asia are staging a rebound from their lowest levels since 2016 after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced a host of stimulus measures.

Benchmark indices in Japan, Australia and Hong Kong rose over 2 percent while indices in South Korea gained over 5 percent. The dollar snapped a 10-day rally while oil and treasuries were little changed.
