Closing Bell: Market Rally Stalls On Volatile Day

Indian equity markets ended with modest losses after fluctuating for most parts of the trading day.

The S&P BSE Sensex fell over 1,300 points from the day’s high to end at 29,893, down 0.6 percent. 15 out of the 30 index constituents ended with gains.

The NSE Nifty 50 index ended 0.5 percent lower at 8,748, down almost 400 points from the day’s high. Pharma stocks led the gains while Tata group stocks like TCS and Titan were among the top laggards.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Realty index was the top loser, ending with losses of close to 2 percent.

1,221 stocks ended the trading day with gains while 596 stocks ended with losses.

Adani Gas To Cut Gas Prices

Adani Gas Ltd. will cut CNG and domestic PNG prices starting April 9, as per Bloomberg.

The company will cut CNG prices by Rs 2.25 to Rs 3.60 per kilogram across locations.

Shares fell as much as 3.8 percent to Rs 90.45, snapping a four-day gaining streak.

People with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg News that the deliberations are ongoing and that the company has not made a final decision on whether to formally bid for Norton, which went into administration in January this year.

Money Market Update

The Indian currency hit a fresh record low of 76.34 against the U.S. dollar. It breached the previous low of 76.2750 against the greenback.

The local currency finally ended the truncated trading session at 76.30 against the U.S. dollar. This was the second straight day of weakness for the currency after Tuesday's fall.

Yield on the 10-year bond too ended at 6.44, after opening at 6.40.

European Markets Tumble

Markets across Europe opened with losses after the region's central bank chiefs failed to reach a deal in response to the Coronavirus.

Failure to reach a deal has also impacted Euro and Italian bonds, which have taken a hit. A press conference has been tentatively scheduled for later today.

In a notification to the exchanges, the company has informed that the production at its Caustic Soda plant at Bharuch will begin on April 9, 2020 at 10 percent of their full capacity.

The filing also adds that the company's Fertiliser plant at Kota will be operational starting today. Production will gradually be increased depending on the market situation and government directives, the company said.

Stock Reaction: IndusInd Bank

The stock is the top gainer on the Nifty 50 index today, surging 10 percent to Rs 422.20.

UBS Principal Capital Asia acquired bought 53.83 lakh shares or 0.9 percent stake in the lender on Tuesday in a large trade at Rs 367 per share.

The stock also ended as the top Nifty gainer on Tuesday, rising 25 percent.

Clarification Sought From Cadila Healthcare

In a notice to the exchanges, the company has informed that the exchanges have sought clarification over a news item appearing in a media portal which stated that Cadila has claimed to have found a vaccine for the Coronavirus.

The company's reply to this query from the exchanges is awaited.

The stock is up 10.8 percent at Rs 346.15 and is the top gainer on the Nifty Pharma index. This is the third day of gains for the stock.

Stock Reaction: Aurobindo Pharma

Shares of the pharmaceutical company turned positive after falling as much as 4.6 percent to Rs 425.15 at the start of trade.

PTI reported on Tuesday that a class action lawsuit was filed against pharma companies including Aurobindo Pharma for allegedly concealing facts about a cancer-causing agent's presence in a medicine called Metformin.

Shares were up 6.8 percent to Rs 476.30 after ending 16.5 percent higher on Tuesday.

Indian equity markets staged a pullback after registering its biggest one-day gain since 2009 on Tuesday, tracking weak cues from the U.S. and mixed ones across the Asia Pacific.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 1.2 percent lower at 29,701, after a 9 percent surge on Tuesday, while the NSE Nifty 50 opened 1.17 percent lower at 8,688 after Tuesday's 8.7 percent surge.
