Sensex, Nifty Scale New Peaks; Nifty Bank Adds Another 800 Points

Closing Bell: A Day Of New Records

Indian equity markets ended higher for the sixth straight day, and in the process, ending at record high levels.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 1.7% or 700 points higher at 42,597. It crossed its intraday record high of 42,273 in early trade and held on to gains since then.

The NSE Nifty 50 index too ended at a record high, ending 1.6% higher at 12,461. The index crossed its previous record of 12,430 in early trade and managed to hold above it, after a brief bout of volatility.

Nifty Bank was the top performing index for the session, ending another 800 points higher or 2.7%.

The Nifty Metal index was the other major sectoral gainer, ending 1.8% higher. The Nifty Realty and Nifty I.T. indices gained 1.5% each while the FMCG and PSU Bank index ended with gains of 1%.

The broader markets underperformed in today's session. The midcap index ended with gains of 0.9% while the Smallcap index gained 0.3%.

The India Volatility Index ended 1.6% lower at the mark of 20, at 20.17.

1,119 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 729 stocks posted losses.

Opening Bell: Sixth Day Of Gains

Indian equity markets extended their gains to the sixth straight day, spurred by a risk-on sentiment across the globe, post Joe Biden's victory in the U.S. Presidential election.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.9% higher at its record high level of 42,273. Incidentally, this is the same level which it scaled on January 20, 2020.

The NSE Nifty 50 index opened 1.1% higher at 12,399 and is 30 points away from its all-time high of 12,430.

All sectoral indices have opened with gains. The Nifty Bank, Nift Metal, Nifty I.T. indices have opened with gains of 1% each, while the PSU Bank index is outperforming with gains of 1.5%.

Nifty Auto, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty have opened with gains of 0.8% each. Broader markets too are trading higher. The Nifty Midcap index is up 0.7% while the Smallcap index has gained 0.8% at the start of trading.

Current Market Update

A Day Of New Records Likely

As of closing on Friday, the Sensex was 400 points away from its record high, while the Nifty 50 was 170 points shy of the level of 12,430 which it scaled in January this year.

Both indices have posted a five-day gaining streak and futures indicate that this may continue into the sixth session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 1.3% to 12,418 as of 8:05 a.m. on Monday.

Stocks like Cipla, ITC, Divi's Laboratories and several broader market companies like Vedanta, Balkrishna Industries, Affle India, Amber Enterprises, United Breweries may react to their quarterly results reported after market hours on Friday and over the weekend.

While there are no Nifty earnings today, broader market firms like ADF Foods, Delta Corp, Equitas Small Finance Bank, IndiaMart InterMesh, Insecticides India, JK Cement and VIP Industries, among others, will announce their results.

Global equities headed for a fresh record high amid optimism about the outlook under a Joe Biden presidency in the U.S. Broad-based gains are seen across the Asia Pacific, with markets in Japan, South Korea, Australia and Hong Kong trading with healthy gains.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading 335 points higher. The index ended with modest losses on Friday when the outcome of the presidential election was still unclear.

West Texas Intermediate crude has extended its gains, currently trading 2.8% higher at $38.18 per barrel.
