The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the due dates for filing of income tax returns and audit reports for FY 2020-2021.

Now, individuals have until Dec. 31, 2021 to file their tax returns. This is the second time the finance ministry has extended due dates for filing of ITR in FY22. The deadline was earlier extended from July 31 to Sept. 30.

Similar relief has also come for companies—the deadline for them has been extended from Nov. 30, 2021 to Feb. 15, 2022.

For furnishing of belated/revised returns for assessment year 2021-22, the deadline is now March 31, 2022 (earlier Jan. 31, 2022). Due date for filing the tax audit report and transfer pricing certificate has been extended to Jan. 15 and Jan. 30, 2022 respectively.

The due dates for filing of ITRs and audit reports for assessment year 2021-2022 have been extended to address the difficulties reported by the taxpayers, the CBDT said in the press release.

The extension came after the income tax department confirmed on Wednesday that a number of issues on the new income tax portal were being addressed. About 1.19 crore ITRs for FY21 have been filed till Sept. 8. Out of this, over 76 lakh taxpayers used the online utility of the portal to file returns. Over 94.88 ITRs have been e-verified as well, the CBDT said.

The new e-filing portal, launched on June 7, has faced numerous complaints of glitches. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has asked Infosys Ltd., which was given the contract to develop the portal, to resolve the issues faced by taxpayers on current functionalities by Sept. 15.
