Indian equity benchmarks fell today, snapping a six-day gaining streak after a series of record highs were touched this week. Erstwhile gains in benchmarks were offset by bank shares after some brokerages found the government bailout package as inadequate.

The S&P BSE Sensex Index fell as much as 0.4 percent to 36,017.5, while the NSE Nifty 50 Index fell 0.35 percent to 11,047.6. The market breadth was tilted in favour of the sellers.

Twelve out of 19 sector gauges compiled by BSE were trading lower, led by losses in the S&P BSE Information Technology Index's 0.9 percent drop. On the flip-side, the S&P BSE Metal Index was the top sectoral gainer, up 0.81 percent.

Nifty PSU Bank: Brokerages Downplay Bailout Package

Shares of the country’s largest lender fell as much as 3.7 percent, most in over a month, to Rs 317.7.

Biocon: Falls As Profit Dips

Shares of the Bengaluru-based biotechnology firm fell as much as 5.4 percent, most in three months, to Rs 600.2.

Earnings Highlight:

  • Revenue up 2 percent at Rs 1,058 crore.
  • Net profit down 46 percent at Rs 92 crore.
  • Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation down 20 percent at Rs 222 crore.
  • Margin at 21 percent from 26.6 percent.

Biocon Ltd. extended a two-day losing streak today. Trading volume was 4.6 times the 20-day average.

Garnet International: Rises On Bonus Issue Approval

Shares of the rose to a lifetime high of Rs 1,964 after rising as much as 5 percent.

The board of Garnet International Ltd. approved 2:1 bonus issue and will increase NRI investment from 10 percent to 24 percent, and foreign investment from 24 percent to 49 percent.

The company’s shares extended a four-day gaining streak today.

Bharat Electronics: Rises On Buyback Buzz

Shares of the Bengaluru-based electronics equipment manufacturer rose as much as percent, most in two months, to Rs 178.8.

Bharat Electronics Ltd.’s board approved a plan to consider a buyback of shares.

Trading volume surged to 5.8 times the 20-day average.
