Domestic Institutional Investors Remain More Bullish Than Overseas Peers

FII ownership in Nifty stocks declined over the September quarter, while DIIs saw a surge

Domestic institutional investors continue to be more bullish on Indian equities than their overseas counterparts.

Foreign institutional investors’ ownership of Nifty 50 stocks declined in the three months ended September, Nomura said in a report. In comparison, domestic institutions—largely comprising mutual funds and insurance companies—pushed up their holding, in line with the trend seen during the year.

DIIs have been betting more on mid caps, with their holding in Nifty Midcap 100 Index increasing to 8.6 percent from 8.2 percent in the previous quarter and 7.7 percent in the year-ago period.

FIIs upped holdings in the energy and infrastructure sectors, and trimmed exposure to finance, fast-moving consumer goods, information technology, metals and pharmaceutical sectors. DIIs pared stakes in auto and FMCG segments, while increased their holding in the energy, finance, infrastructure, IT and real estate sectors.
