Asian stocks pared an earlier advance in subdued trading as investors deferred placing bets following the recent run-up to record highs and ahead of Federal Reserve meeting this week.

The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of NSE Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.2 percent at 10,309.50 as of 6:40 a.m.

Day Break

Global Cues

  • U.S. stocks climbed to records as the latest jobs report bolstered optimism in the world’s largest economy, continuing equity rallies that took hold in Asia and Europe. The dollar posted its best week this year.
  • The S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at all-time highs in light volume after data showed hiring increased by more than forecast in November and the unemployment rate held at a 17-year low.
  • The dollar briefly edged lower as investors assessed tepid wage growth that missed estimates, then resumed its fifth consecutive gain.

Europe Check

  • The pound reversed initial gains as the U.K. and the European Union struck a deal to unlock divorce negotiations, while equities in Europe jumped.
  • The Stoxx Europe 600 Index climbed 0.7 percent to a one-month high.
  • The U.K.’s FTSE 100 Index gained 1 percent.

Asian Cues

  • The Topix index added 0.2 percent. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 0.2 percent.
  • Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index fluctuated.
  • South Korea’s Kospi index rose less than 0.1 percent.
  • Futures on the S&P 500 rose less than 0.1 percent. The underlying gauge gained 0.6 percent on Friday.
  • Futures on Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index advanced 0.1 percent.
  • The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was up 0.1 percent.

Here are some key events scheduled for the remainder of the week:

  • Fed policy makers are projected to raise the target range for their benchmark interest rate against a backdrop of continuing robust U.S. economic conditions, a vibrant labor market and forecasts for inflation to pick up.
  • The European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Swiss National Bank also set monetary policy.
  • Among top U.S. economic reports next week are consumer inflation and retail sales for December.
  • European lawmakers continue to debate Brexit and weigh moves on the next step, while North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiators meet again.

Commodity Update

  • West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.5 percent to $57.06 a barrel.
  • Brent crude trades lower at $63.03 per barrel, down 0.6 percent.
  • Gold was steady at $1,248.82 an ounce.
  • Sugar ends near six-week low at 14.05 cents per pound; down 1.8 percent.

Shanghai Exchange

  • Steel snaps three-day losing streak; up 1.9 percent.
  • Aluminium trades higher; up 0.3 percent.
  • Zinc trades higher; up 0.6 percent.
  • Copper trades flat.
