Sales Likely To Grow For Most Automakers In September: BloombergQuint Survey

India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki Ltd. is expected to outperform rivals in September riding on discounts on its models, according to a BloombergQuint Survey.

Sales are seen growing 10 to 12 percent over September last year, the survey of 35 dealers in 10 states found. The carmaker offers discounts of up to Rs 50,000 on models like the Wagon R, the Alto and the Swift. Demand continues to remain strong for its premium-end cars like the Baleno, compact sports utility vehicle Vitara Brezza and the 2017 Dzire. Waiting period is as high as 16 weeks for the Brezza and 9 weeks for the Dzire.

Tata Motors Ltd.’s sales are estimated to increase by 5 to 8 percent year-on-year on the back of demand for its Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan. The initial response for its Tata Nexon Compact SUV has been good, dealers said. The car is priced aggressively at sub-Rs 6 lakh for the base model.

Mahindra and Mahindra’s volumes may drop 2 to 5 percent, largely because of the government’s decision to hike cess on SUVs and luxury cars, which contribute half the company’s sales. Prices rose by as much as Rs 80,000 after the cess.

Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp, which reported record sales in August, may have a lukewarm September, dealers said. That’s partially because of sales getting impacted by the Shraadh period earlier in the month, considered inauspicious by buyers. Overall volumes are expected to grow 5 percent.

TVS Motors Ltd.’s volumes are estimated to grow 10 percent on the back of demand for its Jupiter line of scooters. The company, which launched a Classic variant of the model earlier in the month, crossed the 2 million mark, helping it secure the second spot in the scooter segment ahead of Hero MotoCorp.

Bajaj Auto Ltd.’s sales could decline 10 percent in September, after growing the first time in six months in the previous month, according to the dealers. Demand has largely been subdued across most geographies even after offering price cuts and easy financing options.

Royal Enfield’s sales may rise 15 percent on the back of healthy demand for its 350 cc model, with the company coming out with two new colour variants (Gunmetal Grey and Stealth Black). The newly launched BS IV model of its Himalayan bike is doing well among millennials, dealers said.
