The Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court on Wednesday will hear applications seeking their intervention in violence that unfolded in parts of Delhi over an amended citizenship law.

Bhim Army Chief Chandrasekhar Azad approached the apex court and NGO Human Rights Law Network moved the Delhi High Court seeking FIRs in clashes that erupted in parts of northeast Delhi. Azad also sought protection for women protesters at Shaheen Bagh.

Azad referred to reports by The Indian Express and said Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kapil Mishra gathered supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act just 2 kilometers away from Jaffrabad, a peaceful protest site, and incited the crowd. Mishra then left the venue after which violence erupted in the area, he said.

A policeman, along with eight others, have been killed and 150 are injured as streets in many parts of northeast Delhi, including Jaffrabad and Maujpur, are littered with stones, bricks and burnt tyres during clashes over the new citizenship law.

Azad, in his application, also claimed that women protesters at Shaheen Bagh—epicenter of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests that have been going on across the country for more than two months—are facing threats of violence against them.

Some protesters, he said, had approached the police on Feb. 23 to file complaints of violence against them but they haven’t registered any complaints yet.

Azad’s application seeking FIRs is likely to come up before the Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul-headed bench, which is also hearing the petition on Shaheen Bagh protests.

Separately, the Delhi High Court will hear a petition seeking registration of FIRs against BJP leaders Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Varma and MoS Finance Anurag Thakur. The petition sought an investigation into incidents of violence in northeast Delhi by a special investigation team from outside Delhi. The NGO also sought compensation for injured and deployment of army in the violence-affected area.
