Government Extends Tenure Of CBDT Chairman PC Mody By One Year

A 1982-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre, PC Mody took over as the CBDT chairman in February. He was to retire on Aug. 31.

The tenure of Central Board of Direct Taxes’ Chairman Pramod Chandra Mody has been extended by an year, a government order said on Thursday.

According to the order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved "re-appointment" of Mody for a period of one year. He was to retire on Aug. 31.

A 1982-batch Indian Revenue Service officer of the Income Tax cadre, Mody took over as the CBDT chairman in February. His appointment was announced after Sushil Chandra, the former CBDT chairman, was appointed as an election commissioner.

In another order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed 1983-batch IRS officer Prabhash Shankar as a member on the CBDT board. The other members on the board are PK Dash, Akhilesh Ranjan and Neena Kumar.

There are still two vacancies on the board.

While Dash and Kumar are holding additional charges apart from their regular duties, the CBDT chairman is holding the charge of investigations in an additional capacity.

The CBDT is headed by a chairman and its board can have a maximum of six members. It frames policy for the Income-Tax Department.
