Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday sent a letter to the central government recommending Justice SA Bobde, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court of India, as his successor.
Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on Oct. 3, 2018, will demit the office on Nov. 17. He has gone by the tradition of naming the seniormost Supreme Court judge as his successor, official sources said.
Bobde was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on April 12, 2013, from his previous post as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. Before that, he was an additional judge at the Bombay High Court. Bobde is due to retire on April 23, 2021.
