The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday appointed a panel to curb circulation of rape and child pornography videos on the internet. The panel has been asked to ascertain technological feasibility of stopping uploading and circulation such videos.

The apex court appointed panel will comprise of members from the government and technology companies like Yahoo, Microsoft Corp., Facebook Inc. and Google Inc. The panel appointed by a bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice UU Lalit will submit its reports to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover.

The direction of the court comes as part of the suo motu proceedings taken up by the apex court, acting on a letter written by activist Sunitha Krishnan of non-government organisation (NGO) Prajwala.

Krishnan had also sought the Supreme Court to direct the Centre to maintain a national register that keeps a record of those convicted for sexual crimes, including molestation, stalking and rape.
