Women Should Apply for BOE Governor Role, Theresa May Says

Women should apply to succeed Mark Carney in the role of Bank of England Governor, Prime Minister Theresa May said.
“It will be important to take the decision as to who is the right person to be the governor of the Bank of England, but I would encourage applications from female applicants,” May said Wednesday in Parliament. “As you might have noticed I do like it when women are in senior positions. I think that women should be encouraged to apply.”
The search for the U.K.’s next central bank leader started last week, with Carney due to leave the post at the end of January.
Labour lawmaker Rachel Reeves, a former BOE economist, pointed out that all 120 governors so far have been men. She asked, “Would you, Prime Minister, encourage women to apply for this job, and would you look favorably on a woman applicant?”
Most of the top contenders are men, though Sharon White, head of the U.K.’s communications regulator, Minouche Shafik, a former BOE policy maker now at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Shriti Vadera, Santander U.K. Plc Chair, have also been linked to the role.
