U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be visiting India from June 25-27, the first high-level engagement between the two countries since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday.

During his India visit, Pompeo will hold talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and call upon other dignitaries, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

"We look upon the visit as an important opportunity for both sides to further strategic partnership and continue high-level engagement on matters of mutual interest," Kumar said.

Pompeo’s India visit comes at a time when a India-U.S. trade war is unravelling, with the Narendra Modi imposing retaliatory tariffs on 28 U.S. imports in response to the withdrawal of U.S.’ Generalised System of Preferences programme for Indian exports.

The visit also assumes significance amid reports that the Trump administration is weighing a cap on H-1B visas issued to Indian skilled workers every year—a move that IT industry body Nasscom says is detrimental to U.S. and Indian companies alike.
