Brexit Deal Chances as High as 80%, German Adviser Says
(Bloomberg) -- The chances of a deal on the U.K.’s departure from the European Union are as high as 80 percent, an adviser to German lawmakers said in Dublin on Friday.
Sebastian Gehrold, senior adviser to the Brexit working group for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, said at a conference in Dublin that while its exit from the bloc may be catastrophic for U.K., the decision to leave must be respected.
The two sides are hoping to make progress on the thorny issue of the Irish border in time for a summit on Oct. 17 and then seal the agreement a month later. Then it would go to the U.K. Parliament for approval, where Prime Minister Theresa May faces challenges from across the chamber. Gehrold said he didn’t expect a second referendum on Brexit.
