Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav met in Lucknow on Monday after exit polls indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party will return to power after election results are declared Thursday.

Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav, who had formed the SP-BSP alliance in electorally crucial Uttar Pradesh to take on the BJP, drove to the residence of Mayawati. Details of the meeting were not known immediately.

According to the SP-BSP alliance agreement, the BSP had contested on 38 seats and the SP 37 seats, leaving three for the Rashtriya Lok Dal. The alliance chose not to field any candidate in Rae Bareli and Amethi, the strongholds Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, respectively.

On Sunday, shortly after the seventh and last phase of polling for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, four exit polls predicted a win for the National Democratic Alliance and a rout for the SP-BSP alliance in UP. Out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is seen winning on 52 seats, Congress 2 and others 26.

The unanimity in forecasts was underscored by four exit polls forecasting that the NDA will return to power with over 300 of the 542 Lok Sabha seats.
