Industrialist Mukesh Ambani and billionaire banker Uday Kotak have endorsed the candidature of Congress leader Milind Deora from Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, where polling is slated for April 29.

The backing of Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Industries Ltd.’s chairman, to the Congress leader comes at a time the party has been unrelenting in its attack on his industrialist- brother Anil Ambani over the Rafale deal.

In a video shared by Deora on Twitter, Mukesh Ambani says “Milind is the man for South Mumbai”, while Kotak praises the Mumbai Congress chief for “truly representing the Mumbai connection”.

Having represented South Bombay for 10 years, I believe Milind has in depth knowledge of social, economic and cultural ecosystem of the south Bombay constituency.”

“His family has been associated with Mumbai for a long time,” Kotak said.

Deora said he was “humbled” by the support. “I’m equally proud that I’m being endorsed by paanwalas, small traders,” Deora said. He added that he would strive for the creation of a business-friendly environment that facilitate jobs and brings prosperity.

Not The First Instance

Uday Kotak had endorsed Deora for the 2014 Lok Sabha election as well, along with other industralists like Adi Godrej and Deepak Parekh.

Before that, in the 1999 Lok Sabha election, Mukesh Ambani’s father and the founder of Reliance Industries Dhirubhai Ambani had endorsed Murli Deora—Milind Deora’s father—as the “best representative” for the south Mumbai seat, via a letter written to voters in the Mumbai South constituency.
