Elections 2019: Maximum City, Minimum Votes

For a city that desperately needs an infrastructure upgrade, gets flooded by torrential rains, complains of pothole-riddled roads and bureaucratic corruption, Mumbai’s voter turnout in the past has been abysmally low when compared to other big cities in the country.

In previous elections, the voter turnout in India’s financial capital has been lower compared to other metropolitan cities like Delhi (lower in five out of eight elections), Chennai (seven out of eight elections) and Bangalore (all eight elections).

Mumbai’s voter turnout during the general election in 2014 was at 51.48 percent, the highest since 1998. In the last three decades, only one constituency has recorded an overall turnout of 60 percent. Can Mumbai break the jinx this time around?
