The Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena alliance has emerged victorious in the general election in Maharashtra, leading in 41 out of the state’s 48 seats. The Congress and its ally, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, are leading in six seats.

The BJP-Sena alliance fell apart during the state elections in 2014, with the parties choosing to contest separately. They repaired their relationship ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to stitch an alliance.

Yet, the state is witnessing some upsets in traditional strongholds of the Congress and BJP.

  • Four-time MP and Shiv Sena candidate from Amravati—Anandrao Adsul—lost by nearly 40,000 votes to an independent candidate Navnit Ravi Rana. Rana is a member of the legislative assembly and represents Badnera constituency while Adsul has represented Amravati in the Lok Sabha since 2009.
  • Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen made its maiden victory in Maharashtra, with its candidate winning in Aurangabad. Imtiaz Jaleel Syed won by 4,492 votes over four-time MP and Shiv Sena leader Chandrakant Khaire, who has represented the constituency since 1999.
  • Sitting Congress MP from Nanded and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan lost to BJP’s Pratapro Chikhalikar. In 2014, Chavan won here by a margin of 81,455 votes, while today, he's lost by over 40,000 votes.
  • Six-term Shiv Sena MP and Union Minister Anant Geete was defeated by NCP’s Sunil Tatakre in Raigad by 31,438 votes. Geete won from here in 2014 by a slender margin of 2,110 votes.
  • Sitting BJP MP from Chandrapur Hansraj Ahir lost to Congress’ Suresh Dhanorkar by 46,166 votes.

The BJP-Sena combine swept all six constituencies in Mumbai.

Here’s how people voted in the metropolis:

  • Mumbai North: BJP’s Gopal Shetty defeated Congress’ actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar by over 4.6 lakh votes. Shetty’s 2014 victory—by over four lakh votes against Congress’ Sanjay Nirupam—was the BJP’s first from the constituency in 10 years.
  • Mumbai North Central: BJP’s Poonam Mahajan renewed her term in the lower house against Congress’ Priya Dutt in this contest between daughters of former politicians. Mahajan won by over 1.3 lakh votes.
  • Mumbai North West: Shiv Sena’s Gajanan Kirtikar won a second term in Parliament after leading by over 2.6 lakh votes against Congress’ Sanjay Nirupam. Kirtikar had defeated Congress’ Gurudas Kamat in 2014 by over 1.8 lakh votes.
  • Mumbai North East: Nationalist Congress Party’s Sanjay Dina Patil lost to the BJP’s Manoj Kotak. Shiv Sena got BJP’s Kirit Somaiya replaced with Kotak. The margin of votes was at 2.26 lakh votes which compares to Somaiya’s 3.17-lakh victory margin in 2014.
  • Mumbai South Central: Rahul Shewale of the Shiv Sena won by over 1.52 lakh votes against Congress’ Eknath Gaikwad. This exceeds his 2014 victory margin of 1.38 lakh votes.
  • Mumbai South: Sitting Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant beat Congress’ two-time MP Milind Deora—who was endorsed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani and banker Uday Kotak—by over 1 lakh votes, the closest margin in all of Mumbai’s constituencies. Sawant defeated Deora by 1.28 lakh votes in 2014.
