Banks will start cash transfers to women Jan Dhan account holders from April 3, as part of the series of measures that the government announced to mitigate the impact of the nationwide lockdown.

Rs 500 will be deposited in the accounts held by women, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, the Indian Banks' Association said in a statement. This will be the first of three monthly remittances that the banks will make, the IBA said.

On March 26, the government had announced a Rs 1.7-lakh-crore economic relief package to help citizens affected by the 21-day lockdown imposed to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The Finance Minister had said that around 20 crore women Jan Dhan account holders would benefit through the monthly cash transfers. As of March 25, there were 20.51 crore women beneficiaries under the Jan Dhan scheme.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 infections in India has reached 1,965, according to health ministry data released at 9 a.m.

Transfer Schedule

In order to ensure that social distancing norms are followed and that there is no crowding at automated-teller-machines and branches, the banks will transfer the funds according to a schedule, based on the last digits of Jan Dhan accounts, the IBA said.

Account holders or beneficiaries under the Garib Kalyan scheme can withdraw the money from neighborhood ATMs using their Rupay debit cards or through banking correspondents and customer service points, in addition to branches, according to the IBA.

“There will be no charges for withdrawing money from other bank ATMs at present,” it said.
