Omicron Coronavirus Live Updates: New Cases Drop For Second Day In A Row But Stay Above 3 Lakh

Fresh Covid-19 infections in India hover around the levels seen during the deadlier second wave last year as Omicron cases spike in the world’s second-most populous nation.

As many as 3.33 lakh people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Jan. 23. While new cases came in at more than 3 lakh, they dropped for the second straight day.

  • Total number of active cases: 21,87,205

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 3,65,60,650

  • Total deaths: 4,89,409

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 3,33,533

  • One-day recoveries: 2,59,168

  • One-day deaths: 525

A surge in fresh infections is driving up the active case count, now accounting for 5.57% of the nation’s total tally. Recoveries form 93.18%.

  • India’s weekly positivity rate is currently at 16.87%.

  • Its daily positivity rate stands at 17.78%.

And as the third wave gains momentum, several states begin tightening mobility. Weekend and night curfews have been imposed in Delhi. Similar curbs are also in place in West Bengal, Karnataka and Mumbai.

Meanwhile, India has administered 161.9 crore jabs, with 71.1 lakh in the last 24 hours. According to John Hopkins, 49.55% of the population is fully vaccinated.

Total number of tests done during the previous day was at 18.8 lakh.

Global Update

Coronavirus cases globally passed 34.84 crore, with deaths exceeding 55 lakh. More than 990 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the world.
