West Bengal Reports More Than 9,000 Cases
West Bengal government has reported 9,073 fresh Covid-19 cases.
This compares with 16 people losing their lives to the Covid-19 pandemic in a single day. The state now has 25,475 active Covid-19 cases.
Mumbai Records Over 10,000 Cases In A Day
Mumbai has reported 10,860 Covid-19 cases in a single day, after reporting more than 8,000 cases for the past two days, according to the daily Covid-19 update by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Mumbai, also one of India's most populous cities, reported two deaths due to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.
Earlier today, Mumbai's Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that a lockdown would only be imposed if daily Covid-19 cases cross the 20,000-mark.
Kerala Records Fresh Covid-19 Cases
Kerala recorded 3,640 fresh Covid-19 cases coupled with 30 deaths due to the Covid-19 disease in a day.
Active cases in the state now stand at 20,180.
Delhi Reports Over 5,000 Cases In A Day
Delhi reported 5,481 new Covid-19 cases and three deaths in a day, according to government's update as of Jan. 4.
While the positivity rate in Delhi has now risen to 8.37%, active cases stand at 14,889.
Delhi Imposes Weekend Curfew Amid Covid Spike
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that a curfew will be imposed on weekends in Delhi amid a spike in Covid-19 cases and rising Omicron threat.
Essential services will continue during the period, he said in the briefing. However, buses and metro trains will again run at full seating capacity to avoid crowding outside metro stations and at bus stops.
He further shared that Delhi has reported around 11,000 positive cases in the past 8-10 days, of which around 350 patients are in hospital. Of those, only 124 patients need oxygen and 7 are on ventilator support.

Lockdown In Mumbai If Daily Cases Cross 20,000, Says Mayor
Mumbai's Mayor Kishori Pednekar said a lockdown will be imposed in the city if daily Covid-19 cases cross the 20,000-mark.
Mumbai reported 8,082 cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours.
Punjab Govt Imposes Night Curfew With Certain Exceptions
The Punjab government has prohibited movement for non-essential activities shall between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. till Jan. 15.
Bars, cinema halls, malls, restaurants and spas will operate at 50% capacity subject to staff being fully vaccinated while gyms will remain closed and only fully vaccinated staff will be allowed to attend offices, including government workplaces.

Omicron Tally At 1,892
India’s Omicron tally rose to 1,892, with Maharashtra continuing to lead, followed by Delhi.
Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala and Tamil Nadu also have over 100 cases of the new Covid-19 variant.
Over 37,000 Fresh Covid-19 Cases Reported
Fresh Covid-19 cases in India continue to surge as the Omicron variant spreads aggressively even amid an extended vaccination campaign across the country.
The nation reported as many as 37,379 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the most in about four months, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Jan. 4, 2022. That compares with nearly 11,007 recoveries during the period.
The daily positivity rate spiked to 3.24%.
