India Daily Covid-19 Vaccinations Cross 1 Crore For The First Time
Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana and West Bengal drive record numbers.
India set a record in its vaccination drive against Covid-19 as its administered over 1 crore doses on Friday.
The country delivered 1,00,64,376 vaccine doses on Aug. 27, according to the government's CoWin Dashboard. That takes the total vaccination number to 62.18 crore—14.08 crore of which are second doses.
"Crossing 1 crore is a momentous feat," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter. "Kudos to those getting vaccinated and those making the vaccination drive a success."
The higher vaccination numbers were driven largely by Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana and West Bengal. The five states alone comprised more than half the vaccine doses delivered on Friday.
Uttar Pradesh, particularly, saw a huge ramp up with 28 lakh doses administered—that's four times the average 6.3 lakh doses daily in the state over the past one week.
India intends to vaccinate all above 18 years of age - that's a target population of more than 90 crore and more than 180 crore target doses (two per person).
Over 50% of those eligible have received atleast one dose so far. 34% of the vaccination program, by doses, has been completed since it first started on Jan. 16.
The government had committed that all eligible Indians will be vaccinated by end-2021.
