India Administers 100 Crore Covid-19 Vaccine Doses

India has administered 100 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines, a milestone that took about nine months after the nation kicked off the world's biggest inoculation drive on Jan. 16.

More than 100 crore doses have been administered, according to government data on the CoWIN platform. The number of vaccine shots administered in the last 24 hours was not available on the Health Ministry's website at the time of publishing.

The nation has fully vaccinated only about 25% of its adult population. Two doses are required for any meaningful protection from Covid-19. And some of the developed countries are already talking about a booster shot.

Globally, India stands only behind China on the number of fully vaccinated adults, according to the Johns Hopkins University's Covid tracker. While China has completed vaccinating over 100 crore adults, India is a distant second with over 28 crore adults having received both the doses. The U.S. and Brazil rank third and fourth, respectively.

India also needs to ramp up the pace of vaccination to meet the target of fully vaccinating all its adult population by year-end. The country needs to administer 33 crore doses a month for the rest of the year to achieve that. It did 23.6 crore in September.

According to the official count, the nation has reported more than 3.4 crore confirmed cases of Covid-19 and over 4.5 lakh deaths. But the full scale of the pandemic is estimated to be far bigger.
