Dharavi’s Covid-19 Count Reaches 55, Seven Dead

Dharavi recorded six new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, including two deaths, as the highly contagious pathogen spreads rapidly in Mumbai’s biggest slum.

A 52-year-old man from Kalyanwadi died of complications related to Covid-19 on April 11, said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner in charge of the G/North Ward in Central Mumbai. In the second case, another 52-year-old man from Muslim Nagar died due to the virus, he said.

Among the latest to test positive for Covid-19 include a man (55) and a woman (19) in Janta Society; a woman (43) in Rajiv Nagar; and a man (27) in Muslim Nagar.

On the night of April 13, a 55-year-old woman quarantined at Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex was admitted to Sion Hospital where she was declared dead. She suffered from hypertension and diabetes and her swab test results are awaited, Dighavkar said.

Dharavi—a sprawl of shanties spread over 240 hectares with a population of 8.5 lakh and over 13,000 small businesses—has so far recorded 55 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including seven deaths.

Total Cases In Dharavi So Far: 55

  • Dr. Baliga Nagar: Five — A 30-year-old woman, her father and brother are undergoing treatment. A 55-year-old man tested positive on Thursday. The area has recorded two deaths.
  • Dharavi Main Road: Two — A 35-year-old doctor and his 29-year-old wife are undergoing treatment.
  • Mukund Nagar Slum: Nine — A 49-year-old man and his 25-year-old son are undergoing treatment. A 58-year-old and a 30-year-old men tested positive on Thursday. Five tested positive on Friday evening.
  • 60 Feet Road: Two — A 21-year-old male lab technician is under treatment and one case of a high-risk contact recorded on Sunday.
  • Dhanwada Chawl: One — A 35-year-old man tested positive and is under treatment.
  • Muslim Nagar: Seven — A 50-year-old female who tested positive earlier is under treatment. A 27-year-old man tested positive on Sunday. Three new high-risk contacts of a previous case reported on Sunday. A 52-year-old man died and a 27-year-old man tested positive and is under treatment.
  • Social Nagar: Six — A 64-year-old man, who had tested positive, died at KEM Hospital. Five of his contacts tested positive.
  • Janta Society: Seven — A couple (59-year-old man and 49-year-old woman) is undergoing treatment. Two new cases recorded on Sunday; one positive on Monday. Two more confirmed cases reported on Tuesday (55-year-old male and a 19-year-old female.
  • Kalyanwadi: Four — A 70-year-old woman died at KEM Hospital and a 31-year-old female tested positive on Sunday. A man, 21, tested positive today. A 52-year-old man died on April 11.
  • PMGP Colony: One — A male patient tested positive on Sunday and is undergoing treatment.
  • Murugan Chawl: Two — A 51-year-old man tested positive on Sunday and another 51-year-old male was confirmed on Monday.
  • Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Chawl: Two — A 26-year-old male had tested positive. A 43-year-old woman tested positive on Tuesday.
  • Shastri Nagar Slum: Four: All recorded on Sunday.
  • Nehru Chawl: One — A man, 60, died at Sion Hospital.
  • Indira Chawl: One — A 60-year-old man tested positive.
  • Gulmohar Chawl: One — A 34-year-old woman tested positive.

According to Maharashtra health ministry’s latest media bulletin on Monday, 352 new coronavirus cases were reported in the state, taking the total tally to 2,334. The count for Mumbai stands at 1,540.
