India continued to report more than 40,000 new Covid-19 infections in a day, at a time the world's second most populous nation is bracing for the third wave.

Nearly 41,400 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry's update as of 8:00 a.m. on July 22. Recoveries during the same period remained lower at around 38,600, taking the active caseload marginally higher.

Key Coronavirus Data

  • Total confirmed cases: 3,12,57,720

  • Total number of active cases: 4,09,394

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 3,04,29,339

  • Total deaths: 4,18,987

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 41,383

  • Number of recoveries in a day: 38,652

  • Deaths recorded in a day: 507

India’s actual death toll from Covid-19 could range between 1.3 million to a staggering 5 million, if you go by numbers derived from research models and local authority data. Even by the most conservative estimate, the real toll of the pandemic has been vastly underestimated because of a combination of under-counting, a backlog in the civil registration system and a lack of testing leading to Covid deaths being classified under other conditions like heart disease.

States have started clearing some of the backlog in recording Covid data. Maharashtra became the latest state to carry out a reconciliation exercise on Tuesday, adding 2,497 cases and 3,509 deaths to the total tally.
