Covid-19 India Updates: Over 27,000 New Cases, Omicron Tally At 1,525

India reported the highest daily tally of Covid-19 cases in over three months as the country braces for another wave of the pandemic.

The world's second-most populous nation added as many as 27,553 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry's update at 8 a.m. on Jan. 2. That compares with 9,249 recoveries during the same period.

The health ministry also said that there have been 1,525 detected cases of the Omicron variant so far. Of these, 560 have recovered.

Earlier, the central government asked states to ramp up testing and combat the spread of Covid. It asked states to set up 24x7 rapid antigen testing booths and directed them to treat any case of fever as a suspected case of Covid-19 unless proven otherwise.
