India announced 6,148 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, after Bihar revised its official death toll to 9,429 -- about 72% higher than previously reported. Authorities did not specify when the deaths occurred.

Meanwhile, fresh infections in the country remained below the 1-lakh-mark for the third day in a row. Just over 94,000 people tested positive for the deadly pathogen in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on June 10.

Recoveries during the same period remained significantly higher at 1.5 lakh, taking active infections below 12 lakh.

Key Figures

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 2,91,83,121
  • Active cases: 11,67,952
  • Total patients cured or discharged: 2,76,55,493
  • Deaths: 3,59,676
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 94,052
  • One-day recoveries: 1,51,367
  • One-day deaths: 6,148

Experts believe that India’s case and fatality figures are vastly under-counted, especially in rural areas where record keeping is patchy. Bihar Health Department’s statement on Wednesday confirmed suspicions that the devastation caused by the pandemic has been far worse than official numbers show.

The Patna High Court last month had expressed concern about inconsistency in the death toll presented by government officials in separate affidavits, the Hindu newspaper reported.

The state capital reported the highest number of deaths at 862, according to a Tweet posted on the government’s official account.
