India’s fresh coronavirus infections exceeded daily recoveries for the fourth straight day amid concerns over a third wave of the pandemic.

India added 41,649 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 3.2 crore in the world’s second-most populous country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on July 31, 2021. That surpassed 37,291 people who recovered in a day, causing the active cases to inch up slightly.

Key figures:

  • Total confirmed cases: 3,16,13,993

  • Total number of active cases: 4,08,920

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 3,07,81,263

  • Total deaths: 4,23,810

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 41,649

  • One-day recoveries: 37,291

  • One-day deaths: 593

While the new Covid-19 cases are more than 40,000 for the fourth straight day, they have receded from the peak of 4 lakh touched early May amid the second wave of the pandemic.

The number of deaths reported, too, has dropped. But actual fatalities from Covid-19 in the nation of 130 crore people range between 13 lakh and 50 lakh, Bloomberg reported citing numbers derived from research models and local authority data.

Even by the most conservative estimate, the real toll of the pandemic has been vastly underestimated because of a combination of under-counting, a backlog in the civil registration system and a lack of testing leading to Covid deaths being classified under other conditions like heart disease, the report said.

Meanwhile, India has vaccinated 46.2 crore people, with 53 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. Total number of tests done during the previous day was 17.8 lakh.

Still, only more than two-thirds of India’s population had antibodies against the deadly pathogen, leaving a large chunk of its people vulnerable, Bloomberg’s July 20 report said citing a new national sero-survey.

Infections are on the rise again in some Indian states, including Maharashtra and Kerala, stoking fears of a third wave. Kerala has imposed a complete lockdown on July 31 and Aug. 1.

Global Update:

Globally, the coronavirus cases have topped 19.7 crore, with deaths hitting 42 lakh. More than 400 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the globe.
