Covid-19 India Updates: India Reports 41,157 New Cases, 518 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

India reported over 41,000 new coronavirus cases as the country braced for a third wave of the pandemic.

41,157 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on July 18. Recoveries during the same period were higher at nearly 42,000 taking the active caseload to 4.22 lakh.

The ministry said that 19.36 lakh tests were conducted on Saturday, taking the total cumulative tests conducted for detection of Covid-19 in the country to 44.39 crore. The total vaccine doses administered has reached 40.49 crore.

Kerala Reports 39% Of India's New Covid Cases 

Kerala accounted for 39% of the new coronavirus cases reported across the country in the last 24 hours.

The southern state logged 16,148 new infections out of the total 41,157 new coronavirus cases detected in the last 24 hours, according to health ministry's data.

Maharashtra was the only other state to report more than 5,000 cases on Saturday.

Global Death Toll Nears 41 Lakh

Globally, coronavirus cases topped 18.98 crore, while deaths pass 40.7 lakh as of Sunday morning.

Southeast Asia continues to reel from a wave of infections that has made the region an epicenter of the virus. In the U.K., Health Secretary Sajid Javid tested positive, two days before England lifts Covid-19 curbs, even as Britain registered more than 50,000 new cases. Thousands took to the streets in France to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s move to pressure people into getting vaccinations.

New York state reported more than 1,000 new cases for first time since mid-May, and a New York City council member called for renewed mask mandates in indoor public spaces.
