Covid-19 India Updates: Daily Cases Breach 40,000-Mark Again, 490 Deaths Reported

India's daily Covid-19 infection rate spiked to over 40,000, as the country shores up its healthcare system for a projected, possibly smaller third wave.

Nearly 41,200 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry's Aug. 12 update. This comes after fresh cases remained below the 40,000-mark for five days in a row.

Recoveries, at around 39,000, were also lower than fresh cases, taking the nation's active case load marginally higher to 3.87 lakh. Active cases constitute 1.21% of India's total Covid tally, the lowest since March 2020.

As many as 490 people succumbed to the deadly pathogen in the same period, taking India's total death toll above 4.29 lakh.
