The delivery of the next billion coronavirus vaccines through Covax could take four to five months, according to the head of the alliance that manages the global distribution program.

GAVI, which brings together governments, companies, foundations and United Nations agencies, delivered on Jan. 15 its billionth dose since Covid-19 vaccines became available. It now expects to distribute the next billion doses in less than half that time, Chief Executive Officer Seth Berkley said Tuesday on a virtual panel organized by the World Economic Forum.

“We hit barrier after barrier” ahead of reaching the first-billion mark, Berkley said. “Now we’re seeing an accelerated drive toward getting vaccines out.”

The new challenge is making sure that every country is ready to receive them, he said, adding that GAVI and its partners are working to help 20 to 25 countries struggling to administer the doses they’ve received.
