Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Drop Below 2 Lakh As Vaccination Drive Continues

Active coronavirus cases in India dropped below the 2-lakh mark at a time the country undergoes the world's biggest vaccination drive.

India reported 13,823 new cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data as of 8 a.m. on Jan. 20. That’s lower than the 16,988 patients who recovered from the virus in the same time period, taking active cases to 1.97 lakh. India had over 10 lakh live infections in mid-September.

They account for less than 2% of India’s total confirmed cases.

Serum Institute of India Ltd. and Bharat Biotech International Ltd. released fact sheets on Tuesday, on who should avoid taking Covid-19 vaccines. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with allergies, bleeding disorders, high fever or are immuno-compromised have been advised against taking the shots.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced tighter curbs, and warned of border closures if neighboring nations can’t coordinate their efforts. The U.K. reported 1,610 new deaths, a daily record. European Union leaders pressed the bloc’s drugs regulator to approve vaccines faster.

In Asia, India said it will ship vaccines to Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Seychelles. Malaysia expanded its lockdown to all but one state as case numbers grow.

Globally, total Covid-19 cases exceeded 96 million with more than 2 million dead from the infection.
